Children & Young People

What is SENDIASS?

SENDIASS is service for children and young people aged 0-25 with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) and their families in the Liverpool and Knowsley Area. We can help you with any problems you might be having at school, and can also give you information about other services such as health or social care. For example a SENDIASS caseworker could:

  • Help you to arrange a meeting with teachers and other school staff about the help you need in school.
  • Help you to write down all the things you want to say at the meeting and even come along with you to make sure that you have the chance to say all the things you wanted to say.
  • Help you and your parents, teachers and other professionals to make a plan about how to meet your needs.

We are excited about the prospect of running a  young people’s focus group. We will be looking for children or young people with SEND who are interested in helping us develop and improve our service to be more child friendly. We will publish more information here in the near future.

 

From time to time we run sessions in schools for children and young people. These will be arranged with school staff at different schools and colleges across Liverpool and Knowsley. The purpose of these fun sessions is to teach children and young people about the SENDIASS service, how we can help and how you can get in touch with us. We also do a lot of creative activities including arts, media, games etc to gain children’s views on topics which are important to them such as moving schools, inclusion, making friends, bullying, and anything else that they might be worried about. We aim to help children and young people learn new skills and confidence, as well as making sure their voices and opinions are heard. 

Transitioning from one school to another can be an anxious time for children and young people, whilst this piece of work has been undertaken in one of our long running SENDIAS Services in Bradford, we thought it would be appropriate to share.

It is our intention to work with  children and young people in Liverpool and Knowsley to understand and address their particular concerns around transition.

 

Primary to secondary

Barnardo's worked with a group of year 6 and year 7 children in Bradford to hear their voices around transition. We asked year 6 about thoughts and worries about transition and then asked year 7 about top ten tips regarding transition.

Both groups designed a storyboard which was then transformed into an animation video. The animation video captures the voices of the children and young people.

The children then collated Ten Top Tips to share with others that were transitioning from Primary to Secondary School. We used these to develop our Transition Booklet. You can download the booklet below, or you can contact us, and we will send you a paper copy free of charge!

Secondary to post-16

We worked with a group of year 11 and post-16 students from Bradford to hear their voices around transition. We asked year 11 about thoughts and worries about transition and then asked college students about top tips regarding transition.

The young people then collated Ten Top Tips to share with others that were transitioning from Secondary School to Post 16. We used these to develop our Transition Booklet. You can download the booklet below, or you can contact us, and we will send you a paper copy free of charge!
